Ed Foundation Groundhog Day events raise $27K

Thanks to generous donors and supporters, February’s Groundhog Day Silent Auction and Raffle raised more than $27,000 for the Woodstock D200 Education Foundation.

Foundation co-chairperson Cindy Meyer said the continued success of the annual event will allow the Foundation to sustain its mission of providing unique education opportunities for the students of Woodstock Community Unit School District 200.

“We never take the support we receive each year for granted and are extremely grateful to the businesses and community members who continue to show up for our kids,” Meyer said.

Auction bidders purchased sports tickets to all major Chicago sports teams, restaurant gift certificates, themed gift baskets, a fishing charter trip, and many other items generously donated by individuals and area businesses.

The Groundhog Day event is by far the Foundation’s biggest fundraiser, which was formed after the 1992 filming of “Groundhog Day.” Following the filming, the producers donated several memorabilia items, which the foundation auctioned off.

Most of the funds raised are awarded via Impact Grants to D200 educators who propose unique ideas that will benefit their students. Over the years, those grants have funded author visits, field trips, playground equipment, special instruments for students with special needs, and hundreds of other endeavors.

Last summer, the Foundation also made a large donation to purchase hundreds of backpacks and school supplies, which were distributed to students in need during the summer.

Diana Frisbie, Foundation co-chairperson, said the volunteer board is proud to continue the tradition of supporting D200 students and proud of the community that has always been so supportive of education.

In addition to Meyer and Frisbie, the board includes: Mark Heckmon, Melanie Dougherty, Larry Baier, Linda Gabrielson, Robert Teuber, Gigi Carlson, John Schuette, and Marti Frisbie.
