Cello ensemble “Break of Reality” to perform

Their performances have sold out across Europe, Asia, South America and North America with tens of millions of views on YouTube. Now the alt-classical cello ensemble Break of Reality brings its high-energy show to Woodstock High School.

Lead cellist Patrick Laird performed at this year’s Grammy Awards with Miley Cyrus and Shawn Mendes and writes string arrangements for Ed Sheeran. The band’s music, which includes four albums, has been featured on NBC, NPR, PBS and many internet outlets.

In addition to performing, members of Break of Reality are committed to music education in public schools. They’ve visited hundreds of schools performing, instructing and encouraging students to think creatively about non-traditional ways to use their classical instruments.

"My students are ecstatic to work with this group of top-notch musicians who have captivated so many people,” said Lyndra Bastian, orchestra director at Woodstock High School and Creekside Middle School. “This is the first time we've been able to bring a group of this caliber to D200, and we feel very fortunate to have such an amazing opportunity."

In Woodstock, they’ll host clinics for elementary, middle and high school orchestra students and perform two pieces on stage with Woodstock and Woodstock North High School Orchestra students. The concert will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17 at Woodstock High School and the event is open to the public. Tickets will be available at the door for $5.

Break of Reality’s cover of the “Game of Thrones” theme has more than 21 million views on YouTube. They also perform covers of songs from Soundgarden and Metallica to Weezer and Passenger.

“This is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for us,” Bastian said.
