    Cross Country – 6th, 7th, and 8th grade

Cross Country running is a sport in which teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain. Our courses are 1.5-2 miles long, may include surfaces of grass, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills. It is both an individual and a team sport, runners are judged on individual times and a points scoring method for teams. Both boys and girls compete in cross country, which takes place during the fall and can include weather conditions of rain, sleet, snow or hail, and a wide range of temperatures.

    Cheerleading – 7th and 8th grade

Cheerleading is open to 7th and 8th grade students wishing to cheer on the NWMS basketball teams.  Tryouts are in September and 10 students from each grade level are selected.  Basketball games are after school and cheerleaders go to away games and participate in the Fox Valley Cheer Exhibition event.  The game season runs from November to December.  Students must have a physical to attend the tryout training camp and tryouts.

    Poms – 7th and 8th grade

Poms is an active and fun way for girls in 7th and 8th grade to show school spirit. Try-outs are held in September where a group of 7th and 8th grade girls are chosen to represent the Northwood Middle School Poms Squad. They perform at halftime during the boys basketball A games. At the end of the year they also showcase their dance at an Exhibition.

    Spring

    Track – 6th, 7th, and 8th grade

Track and Field is open for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.  There are no try-outs or cuts, so all students are welcome to join.  Track and Field consists of field events (shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump and high jump) and running events (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m, hurdles and relays).  Students will have the opportunity to try all the different events and then focus on the ones they enjoy the most.  Students will compete against all the middle schools in the Conference.

This league is designed for 6th/7th/8th grade middle school girls interested in improving their basketball skills while playing competitive games during January/February/March.   Teams will be created weekly with Northwood Middle School students.  Coaches will have the option of having a tournament at the end of the time as well as a pizza party.

    City League Volleyball

City League Volleyball is a program for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls who want to improve upon their volleyball skills and have fun.  Since 6th grade girls cannot tryout for the Fox Valley team until 7th grade, this program is a great way for them to participate in volleyball, familiarize themselves with the volleyball spirit at Northwood, and prepare for future tryouts.  Practices are right after school till 5:00 p.m., three to four times a week.  The girls participate in many drills to help develop passing, setting, spiking, blocking, serving, and court awareness.  Although there aren’t formal games against other schools, there are plenty of scrimmages during practice for the girls to put all of their skills to the test!
