To receive a diploma from an Illinois public high school a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) or, if applicable, the Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid.

    • The FAFSA and Alternative Application are both available starting Oct. 1 of the calendar year before you plan to go to school (i.e. Oct. 1, 2022 for students planning to attend in Fall 2023). Click HERE to complete the 2023-24 FAFSA
    • If you are not eligible for the FAFSA, you may still be able to earn aid (money to pay for education after high school), by completing the Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid.
    • A few students may choose to opt out of the FAFSA and the Alternative Application. Please contact your school counselor for more details about this option.

What items will you need to gather before starting the FAFSA?

    • Student Social Security number (not required for the Alternative Application)
    • Alien registration number - if you're not a U.S. Citizen
    • Records of investments - including stocks and bonds and real estate (not including the home you live in), and business and farm assets
    • Student driver's license number - if they have one
    • 2021 Federal taxes - including W-2s for parents and student who worked
    • Records of untaxed income - child support, interest income and veterans non-education benefits
    • Student and Parent bank statement
